We sound professionals play various roles depending on the project.

Everyday is a new day in the sound front.

Here's a little insight to help you understand what I do.

As a Sound Designer

Sound Design is the art and practice of recording and creating sounds and eventually creating tracks as per the demand of the audio or audio-visual medium. As a sound designer, I am one of the core members of the team/crew responsible for everything that's heard in the film. The sound design stage, in my opinion, should and always go hand in hand with the mixing stage for it is here where the scene comes alive. A Cinematographer creates the visual narrative and a Sound Designer creates the aural narrative to the director's vision. Sound design for games and VR projects interest & excite me as the scope for experimenting is quite high.

As a Production Sound Mixer

Production sound Mixing is the art and craft of recording sound during filming. Known by various titles like Location sound Recordist, Sync Sound Recordist, etc., the main role of a Production sound mixer is to record Dialogues apart from Sound effects, foley and ambience which if not used in the final film can provide the sound designer with a reference of how the real sound sounded in a given space. This role involves a clear understanding of how the sounds getting recorded will playback in cinematic speakers with minimal tweaking and cleaning up. Apart from film, I record ambiences and sound effects in my free time as well. This helps me build a comprehensive library and sway away from depending on pre-made sound libraries.

As a Sound Editor

Sound Editing is the practice of selecting, layering, assembling and laying sound recordings for audio-visual medium. As a sound editor, I'm in charge of the film's Sound Effects and Ambiences. Being a sound editor and having a background in mixing, helps me gauge the way the mix engineer's approach to a film or a project. This helps me eliminate most problems that may arise during the mixing / re-recording stage.

As a Mixing Engineer

The mixing engineer or Re-Recording Mixer is the person responsible for mixing all the various elements of sound in a film namely Dialogue, Sound Effects, Foley, Ambience, Music and Songs. This stage is usually the last major step in a film's life before being released. Having started my career in mixing, it is safe to assume that patience and technical know-how apart from a certain aesthetic I imbibe, are the top tools in my toolkit apart from equipment.

As a Technical Advisor

As a technical advisor, my expertise and experience in studio management and work flow management mostly come in play but not limited to those. Tech advice ranges from anything to do with post-production, studio setups, systems integration to devising a microphone capture map for concerts or plays or live music programs, setting up home theatres and even establishing a syllabus for certain educational institutions but, never limited to the ones mentioned. My expertise has helped a wide array of companies establish themselves as the top players in the field of VR and AR. Especially audio management and broadcast for VR and AR content.

Having said all this, repeating myself here

I’m basically interested if anything can produce sound, record sound, convert sound to electricity or teach someone to do all the above.
